Steve Kay, PhD, head of convergent research initiatives for the Keck School of Medicine of USC, has created a new approach to developing collaborations between academic disciplines. Last year, he brought medical researchers together with computer and electrical engineering experts from USC Viterbi, then had them rotate through a series of quick, efficient conversations in a style similar to speed-dating.
The day-long event gave researchers the ability to quickly gain insight on each other’s expertise and how it could support their own work. The results are off to a promising start, with collaborations in the works that may not have come to be otherwise.
