This summer, the USC Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy and the USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy is hosting the USC OT/PT Summer Institute, a free, six-week online program developed to reshape the demographics of their fields. Participants are undergraduates students from racial and ethnic minority groups who are attending either USC, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Los Angeles or Xavier University of Louisiana — the nation’s only historically Black and Catholic university.
Through the course, the students learn about occupational therapy and physical therapy, reflect on their interests and values and chart a path toward reaching their educational and professional goals. Educators also help them build a lifestyle plan that aligns with their values and teach them ways of potentially reducing health disparities as they move forward in their professional journeys.
