Allen W. Mathies, MD, PhD, who served as the dean of USC Medical School from 1975 to 1985, died on Feb. 5 at the age of 92.

During Mathies’ tenure, he oversaw some of the medical school’s most significant years of growth, including the building of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, doubling the school’s faculty, substantially increasing endowments and making the decision to build and operate a university hospital. He also helped to change the character of the school — which at the time only trained physicians — by including the field of scientific investigations.

In 1999, Mathies was named Dean Emeritus of Keck School of Medicine of USC. He is survived by Weta, his beloved wife of 67 years, their two sons, John and Bill, his sister Margaret, his granddaughters, Amanda and Riley, and his great-granddaughter, Georgia. Donations can be made in Mathies’ memory to the Keck School’s Dean’s Medical Scholarship Fund.
