The National Institutes of Health has awarded its Director’s Transformative Research Award to Rong Lu, PhD, of USC Stem Cell and Michael Elowitz, PhD, of the California Technical Institute (Caltech). The award, worth $8.1 million, will fund their continuing collaborative efforts to study stem cells without needing to extract them.

If their research continues to be successful, they will enhance our understanding of blood cell regeneration within the native environment in the body. Their findings could inform efforts to optimize bone marrow transplantation and provide insights into a diverse array of health conditions, ranging from cancer to heart disease to chronic liver disease.
