Steven Richeimer, MD, is the chief of the division of pain medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, is a renowned specialist on issues related to chronic pain. Last month, he published an article in the journal Confronting Chronic Pain regarding a study by a team of Brazilian researchers published in the Brazilian Journal of Physical Therapy.

The findings indicate that psychology can play a significant role in increasing or reducing the severity of chronic back pain, implying that changing mindset — perhaps with the help of a therapist — can significantly help patients with their physical pain.
