On July 30-31, the division of neurocritical care and stroke at Keck Medicine of USC hosted renowned neurologist, Karen Furie, MD, MPH, neurologist-in-chief at Rhode Island Hospital, the Miriam Hospital and Bradley Hospital, and chair of neurology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Furie is the 2018 recipient of the Roxanna Todd Hodges Lectureship on Stroke Prevention and Education.

Furie’s research is focused on stroke prevention and translational biomarkers. She was previously the principal investigator of the NINDS P50 Partners Specialized Program of Translational Research in Acute Stroke (SPOTRIAS) and the American Heart Association supported Harvard Bugher Center for Stroke Prevention and Genetics Research. She is currently the principal neurologist on the Insulin Resistance Intervention after Stroke trial and a co-PI of the ARISE trial within the Partners SPOTRIAS. Furie serves as the Chair for the American Heart Association Stroke Council.

The Department of Neurology faculty, staff, fellows and residents welcomed her July 30 at a reception and dinner hosted in her honor. The following morning, Furie delivered a grand rounds lecture titled, “Is cryptogenic stroke an anachronism?”
