On March 7, USC Verdugo Hills Hospital (USC-VHH) welcomed 72 students from 11 local high schools for its annual Healthcare Day of Discovery, which invites high school students interested in careers in health care to gain some hands-on experience and learn about the wide range of options available to them.

“Every year, I look forward to meeting these bright young minds and witnessing their enthusiasm and curiosity firsthand,” said Armand Dorian, MD, MMM, CEO of USC-VHH. “Seeing the students’ ambition and eagerness to learn inspires us to continue our commitment to developing the health care professionals of tomorrow.”

The event includes panels during which the visiting students can hear about jobs in nursing, business administration, internet technology and other fields firsthand from the people who work them every day. This provides the students with access to unique, personal insights and a chance to ask any questions that arise.

Students also participated in hands-on training sessions, including performing CPR, preparing a sterile intravenous drip, conducting a vascular ultrasound and more.

“This event is an invaluable resource for students who are considering health care careers. It inspires them to pursue their interests while reinforcing our commitment to educating and empowering the future health care workforce,” said Marie Filipian, MPH, community benefit manager with USC-VHH.

Perhaps one of the most vital aspects of the event is the opportunity afforded to the students to talk directly to various staff members, who respond with honesty and encouragement.

“I’m grateful to our dedicated staff who play such a vital role in guiding and inspiring these students,” Dorian said.
