A recent evidence review on enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is spreading awareness about the clinical effectiveness of current best practices, as well as gaps in knowledge and evidence, particularly in regard to vascular surgery.
The analysis, conducted by Keck Medicine of USC’s Southern California Evidence Review, surmises the gaps in understanding are due to the wide range of vascular surgeries currently in use — which run from procedures done under local anesthetic to open surgeries requiring a hospital stay.
ERAS is a set of best practices that take a patient from pre-op through post-surgical recovery in order to speed the healing process, minimize the risk of complications and reduce — or eliminate — the need for opioid use.
