Researchers from USC Stem Cell and the Keck School of Medicine of USC have found that cartilage-building fibroblasts and tissue-protecting immune cells called septoclasts share an interplay that makes it possible for lizards to regenerate their tails.
The discovery could provide insight for researchers studying how to rebuild cartilage damaged by osteoarthritis, which is currently incurable and affects millions of people in the United States alone.
The first-of-its-kind study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, has been published in Nature Communications.
