When deciding on where to practice as a physical therapist, Wendy Johnson, DPT, chose the California Institute for Women in Corona, CA, one of two penitentiaries for women in the state.

Johnson works at the 940-inmate facility as the lone physical therapist on staff. She consistently sees her first patient at 7 a.m. and sometimes has as many as 13 half-hour appointments per day. She relies on the core tools of physical therapy: heat and ice, as well as her hands to ease muscle pain and manipulate joints. Johnson also provides the use of a cable machine to help patients regain their strength.
