Permanent hearing loss is caused by more than deterioration in the ears — there are neurological causes as well. As part of National Protect Your Hearing Month, Kristina Rousso, AuD, an audiologist with the USC Caruso Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, explains how the brain can forget how to hear when hearing loss begins. This deterioration, she says, makes it all the more crucial for patients to get regular hearing tests and to start using hearing aids right away if needed.
