A noted local philanthropist has given a donation to support urology research and innovation at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Grateful patient Joseph “Bud” Cashen, 84, a U.S. Marine who served two tours of duty in Korea and was one of the founders of Century 21 Real Estate, said he was motivated to support USC Norris after receiving compassionate, exceptional care by nurses and physicians.

“The atmosphere at USC Norris is incredible,” Cashen said. “Keck Medicine of USC is the best in the business.”

The gift is in honor of the dedicated physicians and nurses at USC Norris, Cashen said. He specifically acknowledged the work of Stuart Boyd, MD, chief of urology at Keck Hospital of USC and chief of staff at USC Norris, and Daniel Park, PA, MHA.

“Everyone — from the physicians and nurses to the support staff — is 100 percent interested in your life and overall well being,” Cashen said. “Their overall attitude is unparalleled.”

Along with being an active Rotarian for 40 years, Cashen has dedicated himself to assisting those in need — from donating money to help families of 9/11 victims and eradicating the polio virus to helping local children and adults with special needs.

Cashen helped build hospitals and schools in developing countries across the globe, including Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.

Cashen said he hates money unless it’s going to a good cause and supporting those in need.

“If you want to be happy for a day, go fishing,” he said. “If you want to be happy for a year, spend a fortune. But if you want to be happy forever, help somebody.”
